Hi.

I have noted that the generated Makefile has a CPP macro, but it is
never used.

I also tried with:

./configure --with-cpp=xxx

and no errors were reported (xxx is not a placeholder, but the actual
non existent name I have used).

CPP support was added in revision (hg) 286, but was only declared.
Was the CPP variable ever used?
