For future reference:
empyrical observation seems to show that 1.6 is a bit heavier than 1.4.7.
I have raised some php-fpm.conf daemon settings and timeouts and the situation improved:

emergency_restart_threshold = 10
emergency_restart_interval = 1m
process_control_timeout = 10s
