In short: request to "/" is internally redirected to
"/index.html", and then handled in "location /". Try this
instead:

root /somefolder/stuff;

location = / {
index index.html index.htm;
}

location = /index.html {
internal;
}

location = /index.htm {
internal;
}

location / {
return 502;
}
