I've never tried this, but there is the "Case Insensitivity On Purpose
File System", ciopfs:
http://www.brain-dump.org/projects/ciopfs/

It's a FUSE layer on top of your existing filesystem so may be an
option. It's in the Ubuntu repos, not sure about others.
