502 Bad Gateway on my thread
August 05, 2009 12:23PM
I posted a few topics to the mailing list through this forum and I get a "502 Bad Gateway" message from nginx when I try to view the topic.

I'm not sure if others have the same problem viewing my topics, but I thought I'd post it here just in case it is a bug.

Here is the link to one of the topics: http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,4743

I'm guessing the problem is on your end.

When I click the link I see what's in the attached screen shot:.

If you are able to reproduce it please post the time so I can look at the logs.

On second thought, this may be browser related.

See http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?6,4793.

Please try other browser(s) and let me know what you see.

The link in the original post ( http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,4743 ) now works for me. I think it fixed itself when a new reply was added to the thread.

My other topic still shows 502 Bad Gateway ( http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,4677 ). This happens in Safari, Firefox, and Opera (all latest versions, the only ones I have installed) on Mac OS X.

A few other threads in this forum also cause the 502 for me, like http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,4772 and http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,4660.

Basically, I can browse some of the threads, but not others.

I also get it when clicking on the Announcements forum link ( http://forum.nginx.org/list.php?1 ) so it isn't really specific to a mailing list topic.

I'm not sure whether it is browser specific or not, but all the browsers I use on my MacBook show the same thing. I just tried the pages by using a proxy (hidemyass.com) and the proxied page shows the same 502 Gateway page.

Most proxies just forward the browser's request so I don't think that proves anything. All of those pages load fine for me using my direct connection and using a VPN on Forefox 3.0.13 but give me 502's on Opera, IE, and Chrome on XP. I didn't test my Linux or MacOS boxes.

I'm going to try using Apache instead of php-cgi and see what happens but it's going to be awhile till I have time to work on it. I'll also post a support request at phorum.org.

OK, it seems to be a php issue. I tried using nginx -->Apache/php 5.2.6 and it worked fine in all browsers. Then I reverted from php 5.3.0 to 5.2.10 and went back to php-cgi using php-fpm and it worked fine in all browsers.

Please let me know how it looks on your end.

Thanks for your help.

No more 502s here. I guess it is fixed by the downgrade.
