Help getting php-fpm working with nginx - I get blank web pages

Posted by Blatwurst
Greetings,

Using a couple of tutorials, I believe I've got php-fpm correctly
wired into my existing nginx environment. Whenever I access a .php
page, I get a blank page in my browser. I can't figure out why.

I can confirm that lots of stuff is right. PHP by itself works fine.
If I shut down php-fpm, I get a "Bad Gateway" from nginx, so obviously
it's connecting to php-fpm. What's more, I have nginx and php-fpm
configured to give /status and /ping responses. These work fine, and
if I attempt to access a .php page, the 'accepted conn' values in the /
status response goes up.

I also am pretty sure that nginx is generally healthy. It's been
working serving .html files and acting as a HTTP file server, both
upload and download, for some time now. If I place a index.html file
right next to the index.php file and request that file, it is rendered
correctly.

I no very little about PHP...I'm just trying to get some existing web
pages working. Just to verify, if I take a very simple HTML page and
just rename it from foo.html to foo.php, it should render the same
way, right? That is, a .php file IS a HTML file, right? I ask
because I've tried this, and when I rename a working. html page
to .php and access it with the new name, I get a blank page.

I've bumped up all the log levels and have looked in both the php-fpm
and nginx logs. I see evidence of connections, but no errors or
additional information. I've also asked php-fpm to redirect stderr
and stdout to the logs.

Can anyone tell me what's going wrong or suggest how I should go about
troubleshooting this?

TIA for any help!

That's not uncommon.

However, with no details (which is astounding, given the size of your
post...) of your configuration provided, knowing what exactly is wrong
with your setup would be clairvoyance....
;-)
Good point.

I built PHP 5.3.6 like this:

./configure \
--with-layout=GNU \
--with-libdir=lib64 \
--enable-fpm \
--with-gd \
--enable-mbstring \
--enable-pcntl \
--enable-soap \
--enable-sockets \
--enable-sqlite-utf8 \
--enable-zip \
--with-zlib \
--with-curl \
--with-jpeg-dir \
--with-png-dir \
--with-zlib-dir \
--with-gettext \
--with-mcrypt \
--with-mysql \
--with-mysqli \
--with-pdo-mysql \
--with-pdo-sqlite \
--with-tidy \
--with-pear \
--disable-debug

Nginx 0.8.54 like this (a while ago):

./configure --with-http_ssl_module \
--add-module=./contrib/nginx_upload_module-2.2.0 \
--add-module=./contrib/masterzen-nginx-upload-progress-
module-8b55a34

and here are my config files...

Just went over this in the Russian forum. Adding the following line to fastcgi.conf helped:
fastcgi_param PATH_TRANSLATED $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;

PATH_TRANSLATED is not defined by default
