1. Any idea how much traffic you're receiving? i.e. - how many requests
(within a certain time frame, seconds/minutes/hours)?
2. Are most of your requests to static files, or PHP files?
3. Do you have gzip and browser caching enabled in nginx configuration?
4. Do you have PHP opcode caching enabled? (via APC, Xcache, Zend
Accelerator, etc)
5. If you're running a PHP application that is accessing a MySQL database,
have you watched your database to determine if it's properly handling all
queries, or is it not responding speedily enough? Do queries ever take
longer than 30 seconds?

Jonathan ,

Answers are
1. 3+ million page perview (Some days More than 10+ million pages/day)
2.30% static files and 70% php files
3.yes i have enable it
4.I am using eAccelerator
5.MySQL is Working fine abolutely

What will be the solution or Do i need to add more server but my 50%
ram is free and cpu usage time is 20-40%

If you have that much free ram, I would start increasing the number of
processes that PHP-FPM is running.
More process = more ram (so you'll need to increase slowly, keep in mind
that as PHP is used, it'll consume more ram per script). FPM processes could
be a likely culprit of the 500 errors (if FPM doesn't have any resources
available to answer nginx requests).

That could possibly be an issue with your opcode cache, but I'm not certain.
I've had a similar issue on my own server, it occurred most often while
using EAccelerator, so I changed to APC.
I'm still not certain it's the opcode cache, but that seems likely, as a
corruption in opcode could indeed kill the server I believe.

Maybe disable your opcode cache if it keeps occurring? scripts will run
slower, but may avoid 502 if opcode is the problem.

Take a look at nginx error log, it should say what is the reason.

It is quite possible that you are reaching limit of open files on the
system. What are the values of:

worker_rlimit_nofile
worker_connections

in your nginx config file?

Also, you should check the system limits imposed on nginx user. Check
which user nginx runs under (if you're not sure, run "ps aux" and look
for nginx worker process and see the username). If user is "nginx" run
this:

su - nginx
ulimit -Hn
ulimit -Sn

If these are too low (say 1024 or 2048) you most probably need to
increase them.

thank you,

worker_rlimit_nofile=51200
worker_connections=51200

ulimit -Hn=1024
ulimit -Sn=1024

In the place of Eaccelerator can I use APC

Is both are same?

Thanx in advance...

This is obviosly your problem. Towards that 1024 limit go all the open
files and sockets. If you have keepalive and many connected clients
you can reach 1024 limit very soon.

To fix this, you need to increase the limits. This can be done in
various ways, depending on the operating system you are using.

Here's what I did on my CentOS 5.5. I edited /etc/sysctl.conf and
added this:

fs.file-max = 70000

and I also edited /etc/security/limits.conf and added this:

nginx soft nofile 10000
nginx hard nofile 30000

If you run nginx as some user other than "nginx", then change the
values in first column. Of course, you can use higher values than
30000.

After this you might want to reboot the system to make sure everything
still works after restart.

P.S. You can use this command to see how many open files does nginx
use currently:

ls -l /proc/`ps ax | grep nginx | grep worker | awk '{ print $1; }'`/
fd | wc -l

Nice tips Milan, that will come in handy for my own servers as well.

Sonu, yes, APC has the same purpose as eAccelerator. The PHP core devs are
actually working to bundle APC with PHP by default, in 5.4 I believe.

Thank you......

Jonathan and Milan

Well guys 200 max client process is sufficient in php-fpm.conf

Or how to detemine the number of max client process need to run

Well, max clients should be as low as the number of clients that you
have when traffic is at peak and as high as your system can handle.
The actual number you would use lies between those 2 limits.

There is no one setting that works for everyone, you have to find what
it is for your web server. I usually start with some low value, and
then monitor the web server logs until I get "MaxClients limit
reached" or a similar message. If this happens, I usually double the
value and then wait again. After I increase it, I also monitor the RAM
usage (you have some nice tools like mrtg, rrdtool, etc. for that) to
see if I have increased it too much. Lately, I also use MRTG to
monitor and graph the number of connected clients, so I get a warning
in advance.

YMMV,

Re: 500/502 Error using php-fpm/nginx.. Plzz help

Hi Sonu, APC works fine for me. I have had one process lockup in the past 2
months, whereas previously issues had occurred a couple of times a week.
I made changes to nginx, PHP-FPM, etc, at the same time, so there's no
certain knowledge that my issues were related to eAccelerator. I've now
chosen APC primarily because it's maintained by PHP group and will be
officially included in 5.4.

Hi Sonu, can you clarify that further? When it doesn't respond, what is
occurring? Is there a 500 or 502 error, or it just never completes a
request, or what?

BTW Sonu, you can enable a /status page in PHP-FPM that will show you how
many processes are being consumed in PHP-FPM, that would be handy so you can
track your resource usage.
http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?3,56426 (keep in mind, the configuration
style in PHP-FPM referenced here, is using the old XML-style, while the
current accepted method is php.ini-type configuration)

Also, I found another thread where someone talks about getting 502 errors,
it may be to do with FastCGI configuration settings:

I'm 99% sure you would find it in error.log if you bothered to look
there. What are your logging settings?

I really don't use php-fpm, only nginx. I run PHP with Apache. So, I
can't make any "blind" guess on this issue. You should really check
the error logs to see what happens. If there isn't anything in the
log, try increasing verbosity level.

If that still does not give anything, maybe the process just dumps the
core, but then it probably gets restarted. Take a look at whether the
PIDs change over time.
