You can apply FPM patches (it was a quite a long time before it got into core) also to 5.2.x tree and for 5.2.17 (
http://php-fpm.org/downloads/php-5.2.17-fpm-0.5.14.diff.gz ).
The dynamic manager will let you adjust best process numbers and will show the slow scripts.
