we're running nginx (latest) with ~5k domains + 5k www.domain
without issues. Configuration file is created by configuration management system.
Currently nginx only serve https and proxy to a apache@localhost.

Funfact: nging reload that number of vhost + certificates
faster then apache simply handling only plain http :-)
