aha! thanks so much. the problem was that the files in 'sites-enabled' were not links, they had somehow been made into actual copies of the files in sites-available - so when i edited the files in 'sites-available' the changes were not being reflected in the 'sites-enabled' versions. i have no idea how that occurred, but at least now it is fixed. :)
