Going against Igor, Maxim, Valentin and Ruslan in order to be more DRY you
could use a regex based location (which has its own quirks):

location ~* ^/(?:a|b|c)/.*\.(?:css|gif|js|jpe?g|png)$ {
expires 1y;
}
